Michigan came into Iowa City in a similar spot a year ago and lost 14-13, so the Nittany Lions should be happy they avoided a loss that would’ve erased their margin of error as far as the playoffs were concerned. Barkley was unstoppable and Penn State’s defense was brilliant. But the Nittany Lions didn’t do a ton in the passing game until the final drive — when McSorley’s final pass was right on the money.

Tom Herman returns to Iowa State on Thursday to open Big 12 play with the Longhorns, coming off a bye week and double overtime loss to USC.
Texas (1-2) is facing a Cyclones (2-1) team that put up 40-plus points in their first three contests and seem to be getting things on the right track in head coach Matt Campbell's second season. So what should the Longhorns expect in Ames, Iowa?
The Horns247 staff gives its full breakdown of the contest and their score predictions for Thursday's (7 p.m. CT, ESPN) game.

I don't have a feel for this game. There are just too many ways it can go, too many permutations given that it's an away game on a Thursday night. The whole week is messed up and so is the rhythm of a game week. Heck, the players even have to be back in class on Friday morning. That being said, I like what I saw in L.A. from the Horns. They played hard and played smart for the most part. But Iowa State will have more open offense than USC, challenging Texas more on the perimeter with an open attack. I don't expect the defense to be as good this week, but I expect the offense to be better.

One statistical category entering this game that grabbed my attention was the red zone. Texas ranks 118th nationally in red zone offense (nine touchdowns on 15 red zone trips) while Iowa State ranked 121st in the country in red zone defense (opponents have scored on 11 of their red zone trips against the Cyclones with nine of those 11 scores being touchdowns). If Texas can’t finish drives against this defense then the offense is going to have bigger issues than anyone thought the rest of the way. Another battle to watch is the Texas defensive front going up against an Iowa State offensive line that ranks in the top 10 in the country in sacks allowed (one total through three games) and tackles for loss allowed (11 total through three games). I’m most interested to see what Tom Herman and Tim Beck did during the open week to schematically help the offense as much possible. I’m expecting to see both Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger because their skill sets are different enough for playing both to be something that benefits the Longhorns a great deal. This should be a game well into the second half because Matt Campbell is a heck of a coach, playing in Ames on a weeknight is a tough road environment and because I don’t trust Texas to carry over the momentum from the USC performance. The Longhorns have to prove they’re a consistent team before I go believing they’re a changed squad in that regard. Still, I’ll go with Herman to pick up his first Big 12 win with the defense carrying the day.

Iowa State is on a roll offensively, having just set a school record for consecutive games with 400 yards of offense (six) while averaging 501.2 yards per game in that span, including a 44-41 OT loss to Iowa.
But Texas leads the nation in non-offensive touchdowns (five) and should be fresh and ready to go after a bye week - even if it is a Bermuda Triangle Thursday night showdown in Ames.
Whatever the identity of the Texas running game is in this Iowa State game, that's the likely identity going forward this season. So it might want to include Chris Warren III, who is averaging a mere 8.2 yards per carry. Just sayin.

Something about Thursday’s game makes me feel a little uneasy. It could be that the Cyclones have been known to play some close ones at home on Thursday nights, but quite frankly, I’m not sure it’s outside the realm of possibilities for the Longhorns to be in a close game inside Jack Trice Stadium regardless.
Iowa State has done a good job putting points on the board thus far in 2017, led by a well-balanced offensive approach. The Longhorns’ defense will be tasked with stopping the Cyclones attack, but the Texas offense has to do more than it did against USC. And that will need to be a trend moving forward against Big 12 opponents and the high-powered, high-scoring offenses in the conference.
By the end of Thursday evening, I expect Tom Herman’s team to walk away from Ames with win No. 2 under its belt, but I won’t be surprised if it ends by a narrow margin victory.

Tom Herman has to do what Charlie Strong couldn’t throughout his tenure, and that is take the next step. After an inspiring performance at USC, Texas simply can’t take a step back in Ames. This is going to be a tough matchup against an Iowa State team that is getting better each week. Texas will have to run the ball, and continue to play effective defense to win. A night game in a hostile building will be a test for this team, but I think Herman pulls it off.

When you look at Iowa State through three games, the Longhorns, especially on defense, will have their work cut out for them. David Montgomery is averaging 107 yards per game while Jacob Park has connected well with Allen Lazard (59 yards per game, three TDs) and Hakeem (78 yards per game, three TDs), proving several balanced threats. Plus, we all know anything can happen at Jack Trice Stadium, especially on a Thursday night. So Texas will need to arrive in Ames with an offensive plan that more resembled its San Jose State showing than the Maryland and USC losses: Get the ball to Chris Warren and see how he can open up the offense. If the Longhorns can do that and the defense plays close to how it did in Los Angeles, then Tom Herman and Co. should have their first Big 12 win.

"He's a guy we're really counting on and was playing at a really high rate for us," Campbell said of Johnson.
The extra practice time also allowed highly touted defensive tackle Kamilo Tongamoa to get more comfortable in Iowa State's scheme.
Tongamoa arrived toward the end of fall camp as he worked through academic issues. Though he has played in all three games, Tongamoa has just one tackle this season.
